Preparing a young woman for a 90’s retro photo shoot.

Good preparation is what separates a shoot that feels rushed from one that flows. I've been doing this for over 40 years, and I can tell you that the work that happens before the camera comes out matters just as much as anything that happens in front of it. This particular shoot was detailed and precise, and that wasn't an accident. It was the result of a client who came in with an open mind, a willingness to share ideas, and an enthusiasm that honestly fed my own creativity. That kind of energy is contagious. When a client is engaged and collaborative, I find myself thinking faster, seeing more, and coming up with options I might not have considered otherwise.

Starting with the Group

A group portrait is one of the more demanding setups in any session. Ten people, two rows, a clean white background, there's nowhere to hide, and the arrangement has to work for everyone in the frame. Getting ten people organized, comfortable, and looking their best at the same moment takes patience and clear direction. This is exactly where the preparation pays off. When clients know what to expect and trust the process, the whole thing moves faster and the results show it.

When the Location Surprises You

One of the things I enjoy most about shooting on location is that the environment can hand you something unexpected. These night sky images are a good example of that. The luminous spiral phenomenon above the residential houses wasn't something you plan for, it's something you recognize and move on quickly. Unique locations create options, and part of my job is to see those options the moment they appear and build around them on the fly. That flexibility is only possible when the preparation before the shoot has already covered the basics.

Finishing Up

Preparation isn't just a checklist. It's the conversation we have before the shoot about what you want, what you're wearing, what locations make sense, and what you're hoping to walk away with. The client in this session brought ideas and stayed open to new ones, and that combination made the whole day easier to work with.
